So.. I'm at work right now, and very depressed about the fact that I never update. And that I never read any of my real-life friends' journals. BUT I DO POST! Just not in this journal! I've posted a few private entries over at so_gelukkig (entries that I have now made public)! So to make myself post, I plan to write a little bit about my real-life in each of my art posts! So if you care at all friend me at my other journal!

This will be my last entry in this journal. <lj:music>Happy - Brandi Carlile</lj:music>

Winter break has been/is being nice. I'm kinda getting back to myself, you know? Not that I don't feel myself at college.

I reread Cornelia Funke's The Thief Lord and it was amazing.

I reread Where the Wild Things Are as well.

I rewatched all 54 episodes of the first season of Digimon (because I always loved it so much more than Pokemon).

And my most incredible feat as of yet: I just finished watching 70 episodes and both movies of Cardcaptors.

I remember when I LOVED Cardcaptors. Except I had only watched like 15 episodes, so during this winter break I decided to watch them all. And as I was browsing through some English audio episodes on Youtube, the general consensus of fans was that the English episodes were incredibly censored. And that the story didn't come through the way the writers intended-- the way it comes through in the Japanese versions. I usually don't care about things like this. The English version is just fine for me. I mean, really--it's just the same thing in a different language. But I really wanted to experience this series the way it was meant to be experienced, so I watched it all in Japanese. And the story was beautiful. Like. I can't stop thinking about it. At first I found the voice-actors annoying (HOW many girls can have that freakin' high of a voice), but the voice acting was not as annoying as the crazy idealized proportions of Anime-style animation (LEGS ARE NOT THAT LONG. OR SKINNY). But I got used to it. And The third season was lacking plot-wise, but I didn't mind because character-development-wise it was amazing. And a lot of the general development across the entire series was really slow (as I feel is usual for Manga/Anime). But- I.. I- it was beautiful. So fucking beautiful.

But... I've been so damnnn busy. I, like, have to MAKE TIME for fun and naps. Because if I don't schedule them I'll just be constantly doing something. Right now I'm supposed to be writing my final paper for WR100, but no! I'm here, updating my LJ!

So yea, my recent life!

Visiting Amy in the city was.. err.. adventurous? It was amazing to see the movie with her, really--I would not have wanted to see the movie with any other person. But I was NOT feeling well. Siiigh, I wish I could have stayed longer and not been in such a rush. Still, the movie was spectacular and Amy's floor, pillows, and blankets quite comfortable.

Once I got back to Boston I slept for 12.5 hours and was back to normal!

AND THEN I WENT TO THE YULE BALL!!! IT WAS FANTASTICCC!!! Well... the Harry Potter-themed parts of it. I mean, I just don't understand why some people would go to the Yule Ball for the non-wizard rock bands because they are just as musically-untalented as wizard rock but without the whole 'wizard' aspect. So, instead, they just suck.

BUT POTTER PUPPET PALS WERE THERE LIVE WITH REAL PUPPETS AND IT WAS AMAZING!

AS WERE THE WHOMPING WILLOWS!

AND DRACO AND THE MALFOYS!

AND HARRY AND THE POTTERS!!! :DDDD

IT WAS SO HARDCORE THAT ONE GIRL EVEN PASSED OUT. BECAUSE OF THE HARDCORE ROCK. AND THE MOSH. AND THE DEHYDRATION. Don't worry, she was fine. We all backed up ten feet away from her and got her some water. She stood right back up and went outside for some fresh air.

But yea. It was awesomeee.

I now am the proud owner of a 'Save Ginny' Harry and the Potters T-shirt. :DDDD

Siigh. I must really get back to that paper.
Sooo I know all of you saw this movie a week ago. But I've been busy. Busy like whoa.

I thought the beginning and end were amazing. The beginning moreso. When that mother collapsed against the door frame I got chills. And the dead boy and that black woman. It killed me.

The middle of the movie sucked and completely ruined it. Like. WTF. I understand they're all high and on acid and blah but panorama after panorama of crappy photoshop filters is stupid and tasteless. And the songs sung within said panoramas weren't even that good. I loved the scene in the beginning where they all got drunk AND HIGH and were just crazy. It was sooo effective at letting the audience know the characters were in an altered mindset, why couldn't the director chose to do something similar for all the other times that illicit drugs were involved?

I didn't mind the crazy-ass army songs, though. I actually really enjoyed those.

I would've loved the end of the movie more if it hadn't come after the middle. Like. Really. The middle pissed me off.

WTF Prudence? Why even have her in the movie? I mean, I understand why. But give her more of a role. I mean, really. REALLY!

But yea. I'm downloading the soundtrack right now.

I'm so tired. I got three hours of sleep. Yea, so I think I'm going to go sleep. <lj:music>Braaandi Carlile!</lj:music>

OMG SHE WAS AMAZING!

I mean, seeing an artist live is always better because of the whole experience of seeing them live... But no. No-no-no. It was beyond just the experience. She was spectacular. Her voice is, like, amazing. She treats it like shit but she can effing sing. Really.

Okay, so. The concert. Ahem.

I got there an hour early because I was paranoid for no good reason. Managed to find my seat in ORCHESTRA ROW D!!! OMG, perfect view! To keep myself busy I texted with my friend who was up in the balcony about how excited we were to be seeing Brandi Carlile LIVE! While I'm texting I notice three people walking down the aisle right in front of me. For whatever reason I look up and the first one of them is this shorter guy curly hair, then there is this petite redhead, and lastly a tall skinny guy. It took me like five seconds to realize who ehy were and I, like, freaked out! I texted my friend and was all OMG A FINE FRENZY JUST WALKED RIGHT IN FRONT OF MEEE!!! AAGAHAHAHAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!111

The lights dim and Allison and her "band" walk out and start their set. She was definitely better live than on her recordings. The only thing that bugged me about the performance was that I could not understand a single word she was singing. It was all this muffled blurr of amazing draggish belting. I liked them though, so no complaints.

Once they were done the lights went back on and my friend called me and talked about how A Fine Frenzy exceeded her expectations and how she should really look them up after the concert. Then, like, twenty minutes later the lights just GO OFF and Brandi and her band walk out onstage. The audience is just SCREAMING! People SCREAMING their lungs out! OMG they were insane!

Brandi and her band pick up their guitars and do that stupid warming up thing where they all go in the center and play to each other. Then Brandi, her two back up singers (these two skinny bad twins), and her stand-up base player all stand in a line at the front of the stage. Four amber ceiling spotlights hit them and they do this AMAZING a Capella warm-up thing that was just AMAZING and a bunch of 'ooo's but all in four part harmony and it was BEAUTIFUL! And people were SCREAMING in awe and wonder!!!

Just as a sidenote, when I talk about the songs and the order they go in, I'm really making it up. I do not remember anything in order. It was all a blur of awesomeness.

Okay, so Brandi starts off with a really up-beat song from her latest album and then goes into two more that I did not know and still do not. In between her songs she would stop and engage the audience and it was just so cool. People would scream out song names at her and they would catcall and just say random things. What made it so cool was that Brandi wold actually respond. Like, one time she said, "You guys came all the way from Seattle to see me?!"

Then they did this REALLY amazing song titled something I do not know, but it was UNPLUGGED! Yup! That's right! She was like "(no mic) Can you hear me? Good! We're gonna sing this one unplugged for you guys!" And they DID! And it was AMAZING! No idea what song it was, but it was AMAZING!

She then sang What Can I Say, which I knew from my Grey's Anatomy music. She let the audience sing a verse. I sang along! It was great!

Then she told this story about how her grandparents and great-grandparents were all a part of this family band thing. And when her great-grandpa died her great-grandma called her up and said "Brandi, I think your great-grandfather's Dobro belongs to you now" and Brandi was like "except I don't know how to play the goddamn thing!" And it was funny and we all laughed. And they played a song using the Dobro and it was fun.

People started screaming out song titles again but one person was like 'YODEL BRANDI YODELLL!!!" AND, OMG SHE DID!!! After the yodeling, she played Turpentine, one of my favorite songs! Brandi had the band stop after the second chorus and taught each section of the theater a harmony for the 'Ooo's. It was cliche but I didn't mind. Then Brandi was like "I feel like playing the piano" AND SHE DID!

For the last song of her set she was like "Boston, this one's for you!" and she sang The Story. That song alone was AMAZING! Like, that screech she does at the end was AMAZING! Just, AMAZING! The band ran off stage and we all stood up and screamed and cheered like crazy. Brandi and her band came back ALONG WITH A FINE FRENZY!!

Brandi and Allison sang a duet together which was really fantastic and a song that I know I know but don't know the title of. I feel horrible. It's not a Brandi Carlile song. It's a well-known song. The chorus involves yellow brick roads. Anyways, Allison said goodbye to us all again and then Brandi and her band played another song from her recent album and completely ROCKED IT OUT! I had never heard it before but it was flatout perfection!

Then Brandi says "Here's a song from the late," the audience starts to cheer, "great," they start screaming now, "JOHNNY CASH!" I SWEAR TO GOD everybody, like, orgasmed all at once or something. Body fluids everywhere. I forget the title of the song but it was something with "blues" in it. It was one of the best songs of the night and she sang it flawlessly.

Then the band left the stage and we all sat down and she's like "When I was sixteen one of my friends committed suicide--Sorry to depress you guys. I hadn't really dealt with it until I wrote this song a few weeks ago." It was just her on a stool with this mini guitar thing and it was so emotional and the song was so perfect and her voice was so perfect. Nobody had heard the song before but everybody cheered wildly at the end of it.

After that Brandi explained that whenever her little sister, Tiffany, was in town she invited her to accompany her on stage. So, out came Tiffany Carlile and the two of them sang this duet about angels that was mostly a Capella and really soft with really tight harmonies. Again, it was amazing!

Tiffany leaves the stage and Brandi picks up her normal guitar and someone yells out 'WHAT NOW?' As in, you've sung, like, everything you possibly could, what more do you have? And then the lights dimmed and a lone spotlight shines on her. The opening chords of Hallelujah play. Words cannot describe how effing amazing she sang that song. My eyes actually started to water towards the end of it. And I asked my friend about that and she said, "OMG I started tearing up too! I was like, what the fuck?! I never cry!"

Brandi Carlile is officially, flatout, the best female vocalist I've ever seen live. Better than Idina. Like, really. That concert was amazing and I don't think anything else will ever live up to it because it was just so so amazing.

Gah it was amazing.

Gah.

    <lj:music>Stand Out - A Goofy Movie</lj:music>

College has been GREAT. Really. I was a little bored on Saturday and Sunday, but I've had a really really great time so far. Krystal and I met up on Saturday, but it was only for an hour. She was going to the soccer game with her FYSOP friends (FYSOP is a program where you come to Boston University a week early and do community service), I was invited but I didn't feel well, so I chose not to go.

Sunday was pretty boring too, but luckily Laura, a friend from orientation, lives on my floor and stopped by my room wondering if we could have dinner together (since her roommate was asleep and she didn't want to eat alone). After dinner we went to our floor meeting, where I met some more people who were in the Visual Arts (Kate, and Laura's roommate who's name I don't remember), and a few others in Theatre (Karen and Kate's roommate who's name I don't remember).

On Monday we attended our Matriculation Ceremony. Basically it started at 10:00 and every single freshman walked down Commonwealth Avenue and gathered in a stadium where we sat for hours listening to speeches. After the Matriculation ceremony, an event called Splash was being held on Nickerson Field. Splash is one of those typical college-club-gathering things where all the students walk up and down tables of advertisements for every single club the college has to offer. I signed up for a Choral Society and an a-Capella group, but I don't think I'll be able to make the rehearsals because of my work-study job. After Splash there was a mandatory Visual Arts meeting at the College of Fine Arts (CFA) building. After the meeting Laura invited me and two other people (Lauren and Morgan) to have lunch. We went to a Mexican place right by our dorms where I ordered a really good taco salad (without the salsa and dressing) along with a refreshing lemonade. Morgan was first to leave, but Lauren, Laura, and I spent another half an hour just talking. During this thirty minute conversation, we decided that, since we were all nervous for our first class (Art History), we would walk there together.

And on Tuesday we did just that! At 10:30 we met outside the dorms and began our trek to Morse Auditorium. Thirty minutes later we walked into the lecture hall, just making it on time. The only reason the first class of Art History wasn't good was because the Professor's microphone was on way too low. We could barely hear him over the sounds of traffic and construction drifting in through the windows directly to our left. Art History ended at 12:30 and the three of us decided to get lunch at the George Sherman Union (GSU) where I ordered some pizza and Jamba Juice (which failed to live up to my expectations). After lunch we walked to our Painting class and arrived ever so slightly late. Our Painting professor is amazing, and I'm so happy that I am in her class. After Painting we toured the Gym (not my idea) and after that we perused a local art store.

On Wednesday I had my first Writing class at 9:00. The professor was okay. Not bad. Okay. After the class I walked back to the dorms and had lunch with Lauren, Laura, and their friend Jon (a Boston native). We ate at the dining hall, after which Laura and I had our Drawing class. Drawing was good. I am definitely going to learn how to draw properly from this professor, which excites me, but on the other hand his teaching method is extremely rigid. After Drawing I rested in my dorm, and then met up with Laura, Lauren, and Jon, along with Lauren's friend Kathy (who I had randomly met earlier in the day when she commented on my Spring Awakening shirt), and Laura's friend Liz. The six of us, led by Jon, walked to Beacon Street where we had Mexican food again (this time a quesadilla), and then had dessert at an amazing gourmet crepe place. I couldn't finish all of my Smores crepe (Nutella, and marshmallows = Amazing) so I brought it back to my room to save for another day.

Thursday I started my work-study at the Music Library. Earlier in the week (Monday), I had spoken with my supervisor, and he asked me which day I wanted to start, and Thursday seemed as good a day as any. My first shift was only an hour and a half, and I got through it perfectly fine. I learned how to check things out, how to check things back in, and about where all the different classifications of books were stored. After work-study I had my second Art History class where Laura, Lauren, and I sat dead center front row due to the sound issues of last class. The lecture was a lot more enjoyable and I felt that I actually learned something. After Art History the three of us, again, had lunch at the GSU where we met up with Jon, Kathy, and Kerry (Laura's friend from home). I ordered a bagel, and, to my dismay, it was not filled to the brim with butter. When you order a bagel from a bagel store, you expect it to be chocked full of whatever you order on it. After Lunch we had our second Painting class, but since we would not be getting our art supplies until later that evening (Blick's Midnight Madness sale), we did not have any paints. To compensate, our Painting teacher brought in crayons and computer paper. While giving us our materials she told us to take off both of our shoes, put one on the table, and put the other underneath the table. We then sat in a circle around the table with our crayons and paper, and were told to draw the negative space between the shoes and the table. This was only one of many exercises that were supposed to get us to let go of seeing the object, and, instead, see everything else that can define the shape of the object. I really enjoyed the class.

Painting ended an hour early, so we ran back to our dorms, and then ran back to CFA for a gallery opening showing the work done by the study abroad students. The work failed to meet our expectations so we left early. We went back up to our dorms to relax for a bit, and then Lauren and I (Laura was busy) left early for the Midnight Madness sale. We were supposed to leave at 9:00 from the CFA building with all the other freshmen, but the sale started at 9:00 so we decided to be smart and get there at 8:00. Well, “being smart” didn't exactly work out for us. It took us an hour to find all of our Painting supplies, and then it took another hour to find our drawing supplies. We got on line at 10:00 and didn't check out until 11:30. And that's with five cash registers. It was crazy.

On Friday I had my second Writing class in the morning, and it was still mediocre. After Writing I had work-study from 10:00 to 11:30. I learned a little bit more about shelving books, and was given the opportunity to put a few away. After work-study I had lunch with Laura, and then went up to my room to rest. Later, Lauren and I (Laura was busy again) went back out to an art store and finished up our supply lists (the total of both art runs came to $320). After we finished buying our stuff, Laura joined us and we walked in late to our Director's Welcome. It was extremely boring and very pointless. After the Welcome we were required to attend another gallery opening across the street showing the grad student work. Needless to say we were impressed with nearly all of it. After the gallery opening Amy Heuer called me saying that she was in Boston and near the giant CITGO sign I had been talking about. I think I was about a thirty-minute walk away, but she told me she could only wait ten, so I power-walked. Even though we had only been in college for a week, it felt like it had been a month since we had last seen each other.

Saturday I slept in late and woke up in a heat wave. I tried to have a relaxing breakfast but it was way too hot. I had lunch with Olivia at 1:30 at (air-conditioned) Bertucci’s, and needless to say we enjoyed ourselves. After lunch I had work-study (in the air-conditioned Library) from 3:00 to 6:00. It was a really great shift, and I successfully checked things out for the first time! After work I went back to my dorm and had a late dinner with Lauren, Laura, Jon, and Kerry. Once we were done eating, we went to see a comedian at the GSU. He was definitely funny. Not hilarious (though I did tear up at one point), but definitely funny. The comedian ended at around 11:00, after which we went back to our dinning hall to have some late-night fried foods. It was a really fun night.

And that’s been my college experience so far. I plan to go to the MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) with friends, and then walk around Boston a bit. But first it’s time for some Brunch.

--Ben

So, I'm in my hotel room right now.

To say the least, I'm anxious (bad-connotation) for tomorrow. I know that everybody is nervous and that everybody has to "adjust", I just wish the "adjusting" would be over with, like, now. plzkthnx. I hate thinking about college and getting really nervous (hardly as bad as when I used to think about Drama Auditions, but still quite annoying). Gah. I'm still a tenth grader. I swear. I'm not ready for college yet. The maturity factor just isn't there. Despite what Mrs. Stead says (curse you Mrs. Stead and saying that I grew up and got all responsible). Bah. Bah. Bah. I'm going to try and not be restless for too much of the night.

--Ben

Not too far down on the first page is ladyjaida asking truely relevant questions. It was just absolutely no surprise to find her right at the forefront.

I was filled with such complete awe towards her that I felt the need to share.

As a side note: not that the shoebox_project breaks any points raised in the Terms of Service, but if LJ were to suspend the community there would be no 'we might leave LJ,' there would be 'GRAB THE BOOKSHELF AND THE ARMOIRE, TIE THE ROCKING CHAIR TO THE CARAVAN, REIGN IN THE HORSES!
Annnd the winner is swen_banson. Thank you Aly. And I suppose Rose for your support.

Buttt... bah, I don't know. Maybe it's too long? Perhaps a variation of swen_banson? Shorter? No underscore? I think the underscore only works if there's a maximum of four letters on either side, like teh_indy... otherwise it's just too bulky. And maybe take out a few letters to make it not such an obvious mixed-up-real-name-username?

Help?

ETA: Sooo this is completely offtopic and warrants a separate post later...
So I haven't update in... a very long time. I can't possibly hope to write about everything that happened within those journal-quiet months, but I hope that you can forgive me.

In an attempt to excite my Livejournal!Life I am going to change my username. Except I'm not sure WHAT to change it to.

I was planning on using dukebasino, but I've gained some perspective and the stupidity of the username dukebasino really has hit me. I was planning on using the title 'duke' as the beginning of a short username, hoping to duplicate the neatness of the username ladyjaida... but I think I can be convinced to not use 'duke'. Mind you, I need to be convinced.

PLEASE help me pick a new username, I need one desperately.

--Ben

Wow, I haven't updated in a while--so I'll be brief!

Auditioned for the Variety Show (I sang You'll Be In My Heart, by Phil Collins). Got into the Variety Show. Performed at the Variety Show.

On Saturday I was told I would be visiting colleges from Sunday until Tuesday (if you notice, I was told THE DAY BEFORE--AND I HAD PLANS, DAMNIT!).

Drove up to Syracuse (OMG, five hour drive with my father). Visited Oswego (okay, so we got into the auditorium to hear a speech-thing, and there's Kris Vicencio singing lead for Oswego's All-Male A Capella group). Visited RIT. Drove back to Miller Place (OMG, six hour drive with my father).

Throughout the trip I read Catcher In The Rye, by J.D. Salinger (unfortunately I didn't love it. I really wanted to love it... but Holden Caulfield didn't mean anything to me at the end of the book).

Started drawing Lady Macbeth (I used Leanne as my model, and the picture I took is absolutely perfect--I just can't seem to be able to draw it. The first time I drew her she came out like Marilyn Monroe, and that's okay with me--Leanne's got that whole Marilyn-esque lazy-eyes thing going on. But the second time I tried drawing Leanne... she came out Chinese. Now I'm onto my fifth try).

Hung out with some friends. Went to Jill's hot-tub partaaay (to celebrate Jill's new short hair, which looks amazing).

Started drawing Viola, from Twelfth Night (I used Lindsey Yocum, and she came out perfectly--but I still haven't finished Leanne).

And now here I am, eating away my Easter.

I still have to do my AP Calculus homework, and draw Duke Orsino (Steve Murillo).

All in one day.
